Antarctica's lake had disappeared in three days, NASA satellite told how

NASA's satellite images have solved the mystery of the disappearance of the giant lake in Antarctica within three days.

The ice of Antarctica is melting rapidly. If the biggest impact of climate change is happening somewhere on Earth, then it is happening here. Our scientists are very worried about this. His concern had increased even two years ago. In the year 2019, a lake in Antarctica disappeared into the air, which caused great concern among the scientific community. According to the researchers, this lake disappeared from the Amery Ice Shelf in East Antarctica during the cold season of that year. Satellite pictures have solved the mystery of this lake's disappearance so soon. (Photo: NASA)

Initially, scientists did not even understand how it happened suddenly, the assessment claims that about 60 to 750 million cubic meters of water flowed into the oceans. Once the way was found through the ice self at the bottom of the lake, the water completely washed away in three days. This was revealed from the observations made from the satellite. It seemed to them that the water had found a way to flow from below. (Picture: shutterstock)

The study's lead author and University of Tasmania glaciologist Ronald Warner said in a statement that the weight of the lake's water caused a crack in the ice self beneath it, causing water to flow into the ocean below. This process is called Hydrofracturing. This phenomenon occurs when dense and heavy water comes over the ice sheet. And due to its pressure in the ice sheet, a crack comes and the way for water to flow is opened. (Picture: shutterstock)

For the measurements, the researchers took the help of observations from NASA's ICESat-2 satellite so that they could understand the root cause of this phenomenon. After these events, there is a lot of damage to the ice sheets and a huge crack is left behind. Climate change is melting the upper ice sheet faster than scientists were able to understand. Due to this, the danger of drowning many coastal cities and regions of the world has increased.

Scientists fear that more incidents of hydrofracture will be seen as more surface water melts. It will happen at a speed that has not been seen yet. With this, the flow of fresh water into the oceans will intensify. Scientists are already worried about the possibility of rapid rise in sea level due to melting of ice only. Hydrofracture will make its speed much faster. (Picture: shutterstock)

Obviously, in such a situation, the water level of the oceans around the world will increase faster than the previous estimate. The study was published last month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. The authors claim that the rate of melting of the surface of Antarctica will double in the year 2050. This will make the chances of damaging the ice caps very high. In this study, the researchers found that hydrofracture is a little studied subject so far, making it difficult to ascertain its results. (file photo)
